WELCOME TO DISCOVERY 1

Nei te mihi kau, nei te maioha
Nau mai, haere mai, tauti mai ki Te Kura o Te Ao Whakahura

Greetings and salutations
A warm welcome to Discovery 1

Discovery 1 is a special character, state funded primary school temporarily based at Aidenfield in Halswell.

It is an innovative learning community where children, parents and staff have an active part in the creation  of a child’s learning journey. At Discovery 1 children have a love of learning, can self-manage, direct their own learning and embrace being part of a community.

The school is open for all New Entrants to Year 8 children. Those who thrive at Discovery 1 are those children who have committed and involved families, who are able to enter in to a dialogue about their passions and their learning needs, are motivated, collaborative and are risk takers.

The learning journey of a child at Discovery 1 is a responsibility shared by the child, the family, the community and the school. If you, your child and your family believe you would make the most of being part of our amazing learning community, please contact Discovery 1 today.

The  Future

The Board of Trustees, staff and community of D1 wish to extend their thanks to Halswell Residential College, St John of God and the Ministry of Education for their support since the February earthquake. We are very grateful to Halswell Residential College for allowing us to use its facilities for three months immediately after the quake. We also owe a huge debt of thanks to St John of God Hauora Trust for leasing us the land we are currently located on and to the Ministry of Education which has built our new temporary environment and is supporting us every step of the way.

Discovery 1 has been based in the central city for more than 10 years, so it’s a big change moving to Halswell. The city as our unique learning environment offering fantastic resources like the central library, museum, art gallery, Science Alive, arts centre and Hagley Park on our doorstep.

The new Discovery 1 site on 10,000sqm includes 10 relocatable classrooms, a toilet block, a hard court area, shade sails, a grassed play area and car parking. Sister school Unlimited Paenga Tawhiti has also been relocated and is resident at Halswell Residential College and is expected to remain at the site for the rest of the year. The Discovery 1 site is an extension of the Halswell Residential College grounds and creates a ‘super campus’ for the three schools referred to as “Education @ Halswell”. Discovery 1 is expected to be there until the uncertainty of the future of the CBD is resolved.

While there is no doubt the earthquakes have changed our school and city forever, at Discovery 1 the Board of Trustees, the staff and the community is taking on the challenges that lie ahead and see the future as offering exciting opportunities to create a new environment and strengthen our community. Our goal is to be a part of the buzz of an reinvigorated Christchurch and to one day soon return to our home in the city.
